In our application for development consent this site intercepts the existing local combined sewer overflow (CSO), known as the North East Storm Relief CSO.
The King Edward Memorial Park Foreshore site is on the northern bank of the River Thames and comprises the foreshore of the Thames adjacent to King Edward Memorial Park and an area in the south of the park, including hard-surfaced sections of the Thames Path, an area of green space and part of the multipurpose sports pitches to the west. The location of the site is shown below.
Construction is assumed to start in 2016 and be complete by 2020. Where appropriate some advance works may be carried out before the main construction period.
Work includes construction of underground structures to connect the CSO to a shaft approximately 60 metres deep with an internal diameter of approximately 20 metres. This shaft would be built in a new area of reclaimed land in front of the existing river wall adjacent to King Edward Memorial Park. It would transfer sewage flows from the CSO to the main tunnel. An area within King Edward Memorial Park would be used temporarily for construction.
While most of the operational structures would be underground, three ventilation columns and an electrical and control kiosk would be permanent above ground features.
Please refer to the application documentation on the Planning Inspectorate’s website (link below) for full details of our proposals for this site.
